Month in ReviewThe story of this month, grounded in the data

Revenue reached $30,217.56, up 8.1% on August and past the $30,000 mark, but the account returned -$719.29 against $1,840.39 in August and net margin went from 6.58% to -2.38%. Advertising spend rose 47.2% to $5,993.52 while ad sales rose 16.9%, taking ACoS from 30.69% to 38.66% and TACoS from 14.56% to 19.83%. Separately, Amazon booked $4,891.00 of lost or damaged inventory into cost of goods, offset by $4,256.34 of warehouse-loss reimbursement in the fee line; the two net to -$634.66.

Subscribe and Save reached 404 active subscriptions, up 31 on August and +42.3% on a year ago, generating $6,087.68 at 20.15% of sales; with $12,974.35 of reorders, 63.1% of September revenue came from customers buying again. Conversion improved from 5.23% to 5.68%, Buy Box from 98.75% to 99.35%, and Tuna Pouches tripled to $723.85 on its first month of paid support.

▲ WHAT WENT RIGHT
The repeat base compounded and the $30,000 milestone landed.
Revenue +8.1% to $30,217.56, past the target the August report set. Subscribe and Save reached 404 active subscriptions, up 31 on August and +42.3% on a year ago, worth $6,087.68 at 20.15% of sales; with $12,974.35 of reorders, 63.1% of revenue came from returning customers. Conversion improved from 5.23% to 5.68% and Buy Box from 98.75% to 99.35%. Tuna Pouches, advertised for the first time, tripled to $723.85 on $181.63 of spend at 25.09% real ACoS.
▼ WHAT WENT WRONG
Ad spend rose +47.2% to buy 16.9% more revenue.
Spend went from $4,070.74 to $5,993.52 while ad sales rose only 16.9% to $15,503.75. ACoS widened from 30.69% to 38.66%, ROAS fell from 3.26 to 2.59 and TACoS from 14.56% to 19.83%. Both main lines deteriorated: Tuna Salads swung from $1,257.60 of profit in August to -$480.27, and Premium Canned Tuna fell from $1,266.39 to $589.41. Tuna Fillets lost $620.11, worse than August's $509.45, the fourth consecutive loss-making month for that line.
▶ WHAT TO WATCH IN OCTOBER
Whether spend comes back to where the margin is.
The account is profitable at August's spend level and loss-making at September's, on more revenue. Salads now take 67.0% of sessions and convert at 3.60% against 12.46% on cans, so the ad dollars are going to the line that converts worst. Watch three things: TACoS back toward 14.56%, salad conversion closing on cans, and whether the $4,891.00 inventory write-off reverses or repeats. The subscriber base is not the question; it has grown every month.

Revenue has risen in every month of the window, from $24,839 in June to $30,218 in September, +21.7% over four months. Profit has not followed: June lost $604 on Vine costs, July and August recovered, and September has given it back. The account has now been profitable in six of the last nine months. September is the second loss, and unlike June's it is not explained by a single known programme cost.

Cost WaterfallHow gross sales flow down to net profit
Advertising moved from $4,070.74 to $5,993.52, 19.8% of sales against 14.6%. Cost of goods reads 52.2% of sales because it carries $4,891.00 of inventory Amazon recorded as lost or damaged; excluding that it is $10,887.48, 36.0% of sales, against 36.2% in August. The matching $4,256.34 of warehouse-loss reimbursement sits inside Amazon fees, which is why fees fell to $7,522.48 even as volume grew.

Read the two inventory lines together. Amazon booked $4,891.00 of lost or damaged stock and reimbursed $4,256.34 for warehouse losses in the same month, a net cost of $634.66. Excluding both, September's net profit would be approximately -$85 rather than -$719.

Take TACoS back to the level this account is profitable at

The account made $1,840.39 in August at 14.56% TACoS and lost $719.29 in September at 19.83%, on 8.1% more revenue. Spend rose +47.2% to $5,993.52; ad sales rose 16.9%. That is the whole of the swing before the inventory adjustment. Set a TACoS ceiling of 16% for October and hold it, taking the cut from the campaigns with the worst conversion rather than across the board. Revenue will come down from $30,217.56 and the account will make money; the September trade was the wrong way round.

Fix the hero SKU before anything else

Premium Canned Tuna in Spring Water took $2,677.68 of advertising, 44.7% of all account spend, and finished at -$59.49 on $11,757.06 of sales. It is the largest line in the catalogue, it carries 163 Subscribe and Save subscriptions, and it has been reliably profitable all year. Pull its search term report, cut the terms converting below the account average, and bring its real ACoS back under 20%. Nothing else in the plan matters as much as this one line.

Reconcile the inventory write-off against the inbound shipments

Amazon booked $4,891.00 of stock as lost or damaged in September, against $100.08 in August, and separately reimbursed $4,256.34 for warehouse losses. The two net to $634.66, which is most of the difference between a small loss and break-even. Establish whether these relate to the same shipments, whether the reimbursement is complete, and whether any further claim is open. If the write-off is a one-off reconciliation it should not recur in October; if it is not, the reorder quantities need revisiting.

Work salad conversion rather than salad spend

The salad parent draws 9,599 sessions, 67.0% of all account traffic, and converts 3.60% of them, against 12.46% on cans. The Italian Salad alone took $1,197.25 of advertising for $5,218.26 of sales and lost $780.52. Traffic is not the constraint on this line; the detail pages are. Closing even a third of the gap to the can conversion rate would add more revenue than the entire September spend increase did, at no extra cost.

Decide on Tuna Fillets

Fillets returned -$620.11 on $2,782.40 of sales at a -22.29% margin, after -$509.45 in August and a loss in July. That is three consecutive loss-making months on a line that absorbed $673.12 of advertising in September. The August plan said hold rather than cut and expect gradual recovery; the recovery has not come. Either set a specific margin target and a date, or take the line to organic-only and let the subscribers carry it.

Verify the emergency contact and protect the AHA cover

The Account Health page is flagging unverified emergency contact information. Account Health Assurance eligibility depends on it, and AHA is what gets a specialist on a listing problem before it becomes a suspension. For a grocery catalogue that protection is worth keeping. It is a short task and it is the only compliance item on the account.

Keep the Pouches push going

Tuna Pouches got their first paid support in September and sales tripled to $723.85 on $181.63 of spend at 25.09% real ACoS, the cleanest efficiency in the catalogue. Volume is still small at 15 units, but this is the only line where added spend bought profitable growth this month. Give it a defined budget for October rather than leaving it as a residual.
